The fee for physically screening air cargo before it is loaded, by X-ray or equivalent.
In practice
XB is the other-charges code for screening and the third letter is who collects it, C for the carrier, the same convention as MYC. It pays for the screening itself: X-ray, explosive trace detection, or another approved method. Usually charged per kg with a minimum, so it lands hardest on light shipments. Cargo that already arrives secured, from a Known Consignor or screened by a Regulated Agent and tendered as SPX, may not be screened again and so may not attract it.

Watch out
Screening is not the same line as the general security surcharge, which carriers bill separately under SC. Both appearing on one air waybill is normal, not a double charge. Carriers also word XB differently, some as screening and some just as security, so read the tariff rather than the code.
