The document an airline or forwarder issues for an air shipment, serving as the contract of carriage and receipt.
In practice
Unlike an ocean B/L, an AWB is never a document of title: cargo is released to the named consignee on identity. AWB numbers are 11 digits, the first three being the airline prefix (618 for Singapore Airlines, for example). Master and house AWBs mirror the MBL/HBL structure.
