A container owned or leased by the shipper rather than supplied by the shipping line.
In practice
Used for one-way moves to places where the carrier charges heavy detention, for special equipment, or when the container itself is being sold. The shipper handles the empty box at both ends, so carrier detention does not apply but the shipper must arrange depot and repositioning.
