A way for one software system to request data or actions from another in real time, such as pulling a tracking status.

In practice

Replacing EDI for many carrier interactions: rate lookup, booking, tracking events. The DCSA standards define common APIs for container shipping. Faster to set up than EDI but each carrier's API differs.
